EPISODE 36: “Q & A – How Do I Change My Identity Around Money?”

July 22, 2019

Hopefully not, but if you’re like 79% of Americans you’re living paycheck to paycheck.

Ironically, money is easy to make and there are a million ways to make a million dollars yet most struggle.

In this episode I touch briefly on the mental aspect of money, and I make it brief because Episode 9 clearly lays out how to attract money and how to stop repelling it.

In this episode I go over some of the earlier stuff again, and I expand a little on things you can do in behavior that will attract more money into your life.

In this episode I discuss:

And, to the question of the week, how to reprogram your money identity.

HINT: I’ve suggested this before but you and others may have missed it so I make reference to it in this episode.

Power, Money, and Responsibility: What is Your Monetary Identity?

As I said in the introduction, I’m pretty sure that this episode is going to appeal to a lot of people. Now, obviously, I don’t know where you are in your finances. But I also know and I would have to guess that it probably doesn’t apply to a lot of my demographic. But 79% of Americans, yes, 79% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Oh, by the way off topic, but about the podcast I just made a note here to say this.

Cause if you’re new to the podcast, I know what we do. A lot of times as we start listening to a podcast, and we start with whatever episode, you know, where we happen to find the podcast. If you’re a new here, or you’ve just been here for you know, a few weeks or so, I’m suggesting you go back to the very beginning and start listening from there. Because even though the episodes are random, they still build on each other. And a lot of questions that you might have, I probably have already answered an earlier podcast. Okay, so a question for Kristen. And a question for for a lot of you is when she says that I want to change my identity around money. I don’t have any other context there.

So I don’t know specifically how she means it. So Kristen, how specifically, do you mean, you want to change your identity around money? Is it your identity about money? Is that your identity about the meaning of money? Is that your identity about how easy or how hard money is? Is it perhaps on identity about just enough money to get by, which is where a lot of people live from? A lot of people live from you know what their mindset is, I’ve got just enough money, even if they’re living well, I’ve got just enough coming in to get by to pay all my bills.

But money’s not piling up. And I’ve seen that on many levels. Literally, I had a client one time made 700,000 bucks a year. Now, of course, he lived in California, very expensive, and he lived very well and kids were in private school, and then taxation, you know, out the wazoo in California, and then being in that tax bracket, but even making 700 grand a year he was barely getting by. So is it an identity about getting by? Or is it also an identity about what money is? To what degree meaning what is a large amount of money? And, you know, how do you identify with that? Also, when I said large amount of money, I have a question for you. And for everyone listening is what do you consider to be a large amount of money? What I find a lot of people doing and especially entrepreneurs, I see a lot of this is even if you think $1,000 is a lot of money, and you want to create an online product or training or coaching or whatever.

I see many people that a lot of people make is that the more money they think they want to create, the bigger resistance they create in themselves. Because if I ask somebody you know, for example, can you attract? You know, $1,000? They’ll say, absolutely. But I will say, can you attract 10 million? And they will say, Well, now I can’t do that. Why? Because in their mind, they see it as a bigger amount of money. And many times things that we see bigger, we also see as harder, and we put up more resistance to now the reason that I fumbled a couple of minutes ago is because I wanted to think about my answer is money is also power and money, its responsibility. And when it comes to the amount of money for example of somebody said, I’ll give you a billion dollars, quite literally, I know that the way that I use money, I’d literally turn it over to a in management firm, a lawyer, someone to manage the money for me because it’s not something that I want to do. So that’s what managing that kind of money.

That’s why I said I stumbled there for a second, that each and every one of us are different, but a place that I I play from is why not attract at least multiple, seven figures a year, so that you live a life of abundance? You know, this just popped in my mind and off topic, but on topic. One of my students does very well. And she made a comment that I’d never heard anyone say before and the way that she made the comment. But she said you don’t really start living well, until you make $500,000 per year. And I Well, I mean more than that. So I didn’t really think about it when I thought about and I’m like, you know, she’s probably right about that.

Because when you look at the level of taxation, once you get into upper tax bracket, and you know, you look at I mean health insurance calls for many people are out, you know, there’s their sky high, you live in a nice home, that’s going to cost you nice cars, private schools, whatever it might be for you. I’ve noticed that even people making a quarter of a million a year, I remember many years ago, when my partner and I together, we made a quarter of a million a year. And growing up. I always thought that was a lot of money. And several years back, we were talking about it, we started laughing we’re like, Well, you know, a quarter of a million ain’t what it used to be.

So to live really, really well. I mean it all levels anywhere, no matter what city you live in, you’ve got to be making at least a half a million a year to have all the things that you most likely want to have. Alright, so back to Kristen’s question when she says her identity about money.

What I’m assuming here, and I’m going to assume that for most people, and the way that they heard that question, as well. And as it pertains to them, what many of you are probably asking is how do I create? How do I have and how do I maintain the money? Or the identity that attracts the amount of money that I want, that attracts abundance, so that I’m not chasing bills, and I’m not always you know, robbing Peter to pay Paul.

And so I have plenty of money in the bank. Kristen, the question that I want to ask here and all of you and that’s what when I started thinking about this episode, that’s why I started with go back and listen to the first episodes, all of them and start from the very beginning because they all pertain to you right here. And now. And Episode Number nine, the title was something along the lines of how people actually use the law of attraction to repel money. Now many of you have heard of the law of attraction, and many of you think .

Well, okay, I’m supposed to use the law of attraction to attract, hence the law of attraction to attract money. But the law of attraction is simply a universal force. And you can use it either to attract or you can use it to repel, based upon your thinking, your feelings, your vibration, and your frequency, which I explained every bit of that in episode number nine.

As I said, when I started this episode, and I mentioned before, is that 79% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, that blows my mind. I mean, we quite literally, well, I’m going to back up here with the caveat, when people think about the national debt and by the way, most people don’t know a lot about economics and, and all this kind of stuff. But when people think about the national debt and the deficit, and all this kind of stuff, people think the US is something like $20 trillion in debt. That is not true, the US has extended to the amount of over $100 trillion. When we factor in entitlement programs, I think Medicaid, or Medicare, whichever it’s called, and social security.

So the US is by far, far more overextended than most people recognize. But to get back on track here is at least for right now. And it has been for many years, we had a huge hit, you know, in the in the global economy in 2009. But you know what, even in bad economic times, people still become rich, and people still make money. As a matter of fact, a lot of people became wealthy out of the years, or from the years 2009 2010 and 2011.

So my point was, is we live and I’m going to use this word cautiously. But we live at least in terms of appearance, and opportunity, and the richest country in the history of the world. Yet 79% of the population struggles with money. And I’m not tossing stones, because I’ve been there. But when I look at it now, and I talked to people, I mean, oh my gosh, look at all the tools you have available, even if you wanted to build an online business, or you’re an entrepreneur tools that you have free now that you never would have even had 20 years ago, or would have to pay for in some other form of delivery.

I mean, this day and age for crying out loud, we’ve got social media, and we got obviously LinkedIn and you know, Twitter and YouTube and all these channels to help bring exposure to you to you know, to build the business if you want, yet most people know us on. So anyway, another question I have for Kristen and a lot of you is and I talked about this another episode, so I’m not going to spend a lot of time here, but is how did you grow up with money? Generally, our values reflect our parents values us about money. And a great example is my family, which I’d mentioned my brother and a prior episode and I got I saw a comment somebody criticizing me for that. But that’s okay. Because, I mean, if I’m going to tell the truth and you know what sort of criticize about my brother and I we grew up obviously in the same family. And to this day and age, my brother in law is a ranch hand and by the way, I’m not criticizing ranch hands because I grew up a ranch hand I grew up on a farm and I grew up working very, very hard. I mean, we were doing physical labor at five o’clock in the morning, feeding the cattle, I would actually go home, shower, up, hop on the school, bus, go to school, stay after for sports, whatever, come home, feed the cattle again, do my homework, go back to you know, go to bed, rinse and repeat.

But my brother this day and age probably makes I would guess 20-25 bucks an hour. But that’s where my dad was. When I looked back at my dad, I mean, when I when i crunch the numbers, my dad’s income. And the early 80s, when I went off to college was the equivalent of about $1,000 per week, which really puts him almost at working class with a family of five at this point. But when I asked Kristen, how she grew up with money, if you look at most of you, many of the limitations that you have around money are also reflections of your parents limitations.

Now, I went a different way with money, because for some reason was always me that I wanted a better life. But yet, this day and age, my brother still probably makes 20, you know, 20 bucks an hour, 25 bucks an hour, drives an old beat up pickup truck, yet, I make thousands of dollars per hour just for coaching and 25,000 bucks an hour just for a keynote speech. I mean, it would take my brother a year to make what I make in one hour. But when I go back here, as you know, obviously here is we grew up in the same house. But you know what, we chose different relationships with money.

So wherever you are with your money right now, that is the relationship and the kind of relationship that you have with money. So to answer Kristen’s question, I want look at this in three ways. And I’m going to make these very simple, but I want to look at this, the approach to money mentally, behaviorally, and energetically, and that comes down to frequency and vibration.

So mentally, we attract our identity. And if you’ve listened to it for any amount of time you listen to other episodes, you know that what we have on the inside is what we’re going to have on the outside, we cannot outperform our unconscious identity. So whatever identity you have, about money is what you actually what you think, what you feel, what you do, and what you create.

So as I said, I’m not going to spend a lot of time on that here because I want to go a little bit different direction. But make no mistake about it is your external, your external world, your environment, your money, is a direct reflection of your internal environment. I even mentioned that a couple of weeks ago about Mike Tyson, I think Mike Tyson made something like $330 million. And in the course of his career, and this day and age, he’s actually broke, he’s got no money. So that’s how you know that’s the identity that he has on the inside.

When I use the word behaviorly, what I talk about is what are you doing your behavior? And then how do you approach what you do and your behavior. And specifically, I want to talk about the episodes of the past two weeks, on AYNI,A-Y-N-I which is ancient Indian for the Reciprocity of Life. So when it comes to your behavior, how do you respond to other people? Do you serve other people? Or do you wait to get first before you give anything? And then another way here that I want to look at this is gratitude.

You know, as I just mentioned, we live in the richest part of the world. Well, if you’re in the United States, I should preface that because I’ve got listeners from all over the world. But if you’re listening, you’re probably in a first world country somewhere. And you probably have plenty of financial opportunity in some way in some form in your life.

But you know, talking about gratitude, a lot of times people will ask me, they’ll say, you know, Jim, if I don’t have any money, then how can I feel rich, because you might have listened to the episode where I talked about, we’re not going to be rich until we feel rich. And my answer for that plain and simple was gratitude. Because as I was just talking about, about, you know, where you live in the world, and the opportunity, you have this, this statistic may be off a little bit, I read this somewhere, it was somewhere reputable.

But if I remember correctly, what it said was, is if you have $1,000, in the bank, you have a roof over your head, and you have food than you are richer than 90% of humans. Consider that if you got 1000 bucks in the bank, you got a roof over your head and food, you were richer than 90% of humans, yet most of us where we look at our lives is not enough, always chasing lack not enough, always chasing lack.

And we run that cycle over and over and over again, especially as I just alluded to, right here in the United States, you’ve got tons of opportunity for whatever it is that you want to do. I mean opportunity all around you. But if you’re not attracting money, it’s because money is not in your identity. Also, I wanted to ask here, I wanted to ask you for a favor, and in some way demonstrates the last two Wednesday episodes on the concept of AYNI, which is service, which is giving first, and I would like I would request, please, if you would please, if you could reciprocate, if you’re enjoying these episodes, and they’re helping you and you’re Transforming Your Life, if you could reciprocate, I’d be very grateful. And what I mean by that is the fact that you’re getting huge value. I mean, you’re here you’re listening, so you’re probably getting huge value, if you would reciprocate.

And please leave a review, and share an episode or two or as many as you want, or share the podcast on Instagram and Facebook, so that I can serve other people. I would be, I would be extremely grateful for that. So thank you so much.

Okay, so let’s go here. So the question was, is how do I change my idea around money? And let’s look at a few tangible things here. Number one, it could be small shifts. And what I mean by making small little shifts is, I’m telling you, like I said, I grew up when I consider in my mind I can I think we were poor socioeconomically, we were working class. I mean, we never had any extras. Money was always scarce. My mother was always borrowing money from her parents never had new cars, we never got anything new unless it was a birthday or Christmas, or whatever.

And as I mentioned before, when I went to college, my dad said he wasn’t going to help me, I had to figure it out on my own. And that was, that was the entire mindset in the, house. So when I talk about small shifts, I used to actually eat by and struggle with everything. And small shifts, how about little things like this? When you go to a restaurant? Do you actually skimp on a restaurant? Because you’re going to save $3? Or do you go somewhere that you actually want to eat? When you go to a restaurant? Do you tip straight 15% when you have great service? Or do you tip you know, 20,25 30%, when you have great service. That’s what I mean by small shifts, when I tell people that are in my coaching with me, while a lot of times what I’ll tell them to do is upgrade their airfare.

If you’re flying on, you know, if you’re flying and you generally fly economy, well then upgrade to first class. And that might be a little bit out of people’s comfort zones. But guess what, you never leave your comfort zone, you never leave your comfort zone. So I want you to think about right now what is one thing, one simple thing that you could start doing a little bit differently, that would start shifting your behavior, which would shift you’re thinking, so let’s say for example, you go to the restaurant, maybe you can actually shift by picking restaurants you want to go to that might cost you 10 bucks more, or 20 bucks more, or you tip more or something like that.

Or if you’re a woman, you know, makeup. And I caught myself when I said if you’re a woman, I mean, I suppose you know, men wear makeup to or whatever I don’t know. But you know, if you buy makeup, if you’re always buying a cheap brands, which by the way, even name brands really aren’t good for a lot of people because they’ve got so much crap, and so many chemicals and dumb. But you know what, whatever daily products you might use, maybe you upgrade the product, maybe you buy, I don’t know you buy your products from Neiman Marcus or Macy’s as opposed to Walmart or something. But that’s what I mean by changing your behavior.

Another little exercise here that I used to do probably was about 10 years ago, and I did it for a couple of years, is I learned this that well, which I talked about on the episode of money is that I’m not going to be rich until I feel rich. But how about carrying 100 bucks in your pocket. And I’d say at least 100. And what I learned is, is that when you carry 100 bucks in your pocket, what you do is you don’t have to spend it. But when you see something that you want what you say to yourself, if you know providing a 10 to 100 bucks. If I wanted this, I could buy this, though I choose not to and the moment if I wanted this, I could buy this, though I choose not to and the moment.

Now, what’s the purpose of this? Well, if you did it once a day, you’re spending 100 bucks a day. But what if you mentally, emotionally meaning, you know, it’s a mental thing? What if you did that 10 times a day, now you’re spending $1,000 a day. And I once had a client of mine, he was already doing pretty well when I taught him this. And he says you know what, 100 is not enough, he goes, I’m going to carry 300 in my pocket, my front pocket, so it’s not on my wallet. Because if it’s in my wallet, it’s hidden, then it’s out of sight. But what if I carried 300 bucks in my pocket. And you know what, every time I put my hand in there, it reminded me that I could carry 300 bucks in my pocket.

So that’s another way is you can start start shifting your identity like that and start reprogramming your mind like that about a decade ago, and I stopped doing it because that’s easy to lose. But I used to carry a one ounce gold, Eagle, and American Eagle. And back then gold was about 1200 bucks an ounce. And the reason that I said I stopped doing it is because it’s so easy to lose that which I’ve done before. But I used to carry gold. And if you carry actually any change in your pocket and bangs up against gold, gold makes a very particular sound. And it used to remind me that I was a rich enough to carry at least a gold Eagle in my pocket.

Which by the way, I don’t do that anymore. And candidly, I don’t even carry cash anymore. I’m just not at that place anymore. Not that I don’t use cash, I use, you know, credit for everything because I want the miles and the points and everything else. But I just I don’t carry cash. And if I did right now it would if I were going to do this exercise again, I carry at least a couple of thousand dollars in my pocket. Okay. Do it by the way, I do carry cash in my car, and my console. And the reason why is because I give away a lot of cash. As I mentioned before, I don’t care what people do with money. It’s not a matter of what they do with money when I give money. And I’m not doing it to enable people either. I use my intuition about who I should give money to and who I should not when it comes to panhandlers.

I don’t want to you know, I don’t want to enable anybody to stay a panhandler. But there are times that people really do need money. And I have a soft heart for animals. I’m an animal lover, I have a couple of dogs. There is a guy in my near my neighborhood, and he’s always in the same corner. He’s got a dog and his sign says can you spare $1 for dog food? And I saw him a few weeks ago, and I gave him 40 bucks because I had 40 bucks on me what’s he going to do with it? I don’t know. But hopefully it’s going to feed his dog as well. Okay, another way here is episode number nine. I’m not going to actually elucidate too much on this, but reprogramming your subconscious mind. So I’m looking at this from two perspectives. One is reprogramming the mind, which is one mental perspective. And the second perspective is behaviorally meaning small shifts are carrying money in your pocket. So those are two ways right there. But definitely every one of you if you have not, you want to go back and listen to episode number nine on reprogramming your subconscious mind. Let me share something else with you.

Somebody wants a couple people have asked me before Jim, how did you make the shift? How did you get out of I’m not going to say poverty? Because it wasn’t poverty. But how did you make that shift from being poor to being rich. And the way that I made the shift, this is very nebulous, and hopefully you get your mind around this. But the way that I made the shift is what was that I decided to trust in the universe. 100%, not 99%, not 97%. But 100%. And I trusted that if I held my thought, and my feeling, and my vibration and my frequency and wealth, via using by using via using gratitude.

If I did that, and I trust that 100% and the laws of the universe, things would shift. And that’s when they started shifting. So that’s the way that I did it. And then what I did is I shifted instead of you know, air quotes, shifting the identity, air quotes, identity, the word identity, I just shifted in the way that I was being and you probably know from the podcast that everything comes down to be do have, how your being will affect what you do, and what you do will affect what you have.

So I decided to be grateful, and to be trusting of the universe 100%. Okay, so I’m not quite sure how to pull the transformational takeaway a single one out of this episode. But the reality or and the reality is, is that you’re not going to have it on the outside, until you have it on the inside, what I want to share, which means in your unconscious identity. Also, what I want to point out is do not fight your identity. I don’t want to extend this episode too much more. But I want to add a few other thoughts here.

And I know I’ve added this another other episodes is that many times people focus, like Kristen, maybe she wants the identity to attract money. However, what most people focus on is the wrong part of the equation. They focus on attracting money, which is an effect of a cause. And what I’d rather you focus on is being the cause that creates the money. Because if you if you’re focusing just on the money, you’re focusing on effect, and you’re focusing in the wrong place.

Okay, so the transformational takeaway. Like I said, I kind of stumbled with the takeaway that I wanted to give you this week. But the reality is this until you have it on the inside, you will not have it on the outside. Okay, the next episode is going to be a doozy episode for a lot of people. I like to keep things simple, but this is a big deal the next episode, and that is the next episode is going to be about are you ready, it’s going to be about control. And in that episode, what I talk about is that you have control of nothing.

And to demonstrate that, try to control your own thinking. I mean, even Christians question this episode demonstrates that we can’t even control our own thinking. Now we can choose our thinking, but we can’t control it. And I know a fair amount of you are your control freaks and you get into control. And I watch control destroys families, and relationships, and business. And not even that control, as you’ll discover in the next episode is an illusion. And when you get into the illusion of control, you are controlled by the illusion of control. Okay, thanks for listening, and I’ll catch you on the next episode. Bye bye.
