The Jim Fortin Podcast
EPISODE 177: “The Danger Of Living Your Life From Convenience”
July 28, 2021
We all know what convenience is however most of us have never thought about how much we “get into it” and how hurtful that it is.
In this quick episode, I discuss the two aspects of convenience that hurt us and a new way we can be to avoid the dangers of convenience.
One way that we live from convenience is in the moment. We may not want to work out or mow the yard or run to the store. All understandable, however, this complacency of behavior often leads to more complacency.
The second way I discuss is life complacency. We often don’t stretch ourselves to create what we want in life because it’s not convenient. That is the death of great success and achievement!
Transformational Takeaway
If you really want something then do whatever it takes to make it happen, even when it’s not convenient.
More Jim!

The Danger Of Living Your Life From Convenience
So you know, this episode is about the Danger of Living your Life from Convenience. And this episode was born out of my week, this week. And that, just to be very candid with you, it is not convenient for me to do this episode right now. And the reason why is because I'm sick. And I've been sick for about a week. And yes, I know what's going on with me and everything else. And yes, I'm, you know, doing everything I need to take care of myself. But I'm not feeling well, right now. And a lot of people have been here, by the way, but I'm not feeling well at all. And the last thing I want to be doing is to be doing a podcast episode. You know, at this moment, I would much rather trust me, I'd much rather be crashed out watching some Netflix, or just sleeping, which I've done for a few days as well. So anyway, I want to use this, this moment to, you know, take advantage of a situation to share with you something you probably, you know, probably heard me say before, that I've learned from my brother in law, the shaman, Don Xavier. And it's that we can't live our lives from or by convenience. And so many of us want to live our lives by convenient, why? Which it makes sense. We want you know, things to be as easy as possible. But I'll go into why that's really, you know, it's really a dangerous place to live from. And I know I've said before, you know, this won't be a long episode, and then it ends up being 40 minutes.
I don't have the energy to do 40 minutes. So I think we'll get wrapped up anywhere from 10 to 15 minutes. But I'll make my point. So when we look at convenience, people living by convenience, it's like this podcast? as I'd mentioned, it is not convenient for me to do this. As I mentioned, there's anything I'd rather be doing right now for the most part, than this, and I love doing the podcast. I mean, I enjoy doing them, but not so much right now. And then I want to look at convenience and life overall, in that so many people want everything all the time in their life to be convenient. And if it's not convenient, then they just don't do it. And then they wonder why nothing ever changes in their life. I do wonder I was thinking a bit about this episode. You know, a little earlier today. I was thinking about, you know, the concept of convenience. And the courts, we're as human beings and beings, we're wired to actually want to work as little as possible. The brain actually doesn't really want to work all that hard. It's the way the brain is designed to conserve energy to not work hard in terms of even you know, thought processing and everything else.
But I look at companies like many years ago, like 7/11 and as best I know that company is built on the concept of convenience. And all of us know that you can buy, you know, let's take milk for example. If you go to a convenience store, it's more expensive than if you go to a super market which they have it all the way at the back of the store and you've got a park in the parking lot walk all the way through the store and all the way to the back. But what are you paying for? You're paying for the convenience. And if you look at things like for example, Amazon and Amazon Prime, that's all convenient based and expediency about having something right now, I'm just laughing as I say that because I have several sets of in laws four sets to be exact. And one of the couples their second home is in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It's their vacation home, and they spend a lot of time there. And we were also hanging out with them and another, you know, a set of in laws. And their house is in Estes Park, Colorado. And the whole family was together and my brother in law who lives in Thousand Oaks was saying to one of the sets of in laws, or, you know, brother and sister in law's not in laws that you guys should get get amazon prime, and my sister in law who lives in Estes Park, she pondered for a moment. And she said, Why do I want amazon prime? And my brother in law said, well, you can get everything here fast, some things and one day, some things in two days. And they literally live on top of a mountain outside of Estes Park. I mean, they literally live in the middle of nowhere.
And my sister in law thought, and she goes, I can't think of anything that I would need in two days. And I laugh at that there's so many things that we don't need quickly. But we think we do. Why, because we've been conditioned. Anyway, I just want to, you know, move on here very quickly. But this podcast is not convenient for me. I mean, candidly, honestly, I feel like hell right now, I just don't want to do this. And it's not convenient. But I'm doing it. Why? Because it's my podcast. And it's what I do. I mean, I imagine, you know, the times that I've not wanted to do the podcast episode that I've been tired, I've been traveling, or whatever, and I do it. But I always know I have to do it. Now, if you've been listening for any amount of time, you may know, or you do know that I had heart failure in 2020, and a stroke, and 2020 hemorrhagic stroke. And today, for the most part, I'm just fine. But I took a hiatus, you know, in November at the end of 2020, because I was out of the hospital with a stroke. And I couldn't do it for a couple of months. But I got right back in the saddle very quickly.
So look at the things in your daily life, and the things that you don't want to do. And that's okay. But it's, it's, I think what separates us and a lot of people is no one promised you that life is going to be convenient for you that everything is going to be easy for you. You know, my brother in law has talked often about the convenience of spiritual work. The work that I do with him, which I've done for two and a half decades requires a lot of commitment, and a lot of discipline, and a lot of dedication, dedication. And there are a lot a lot of times I'm like, I just don't want to do that today. But I have to do it anyway. And the reason why don't have to do anything, but I do it because I choose. But the reality is, is to not do things that facilitate my spiritual growth when they're right in front of me, and I can do them, but I don't do them because I don't want to is me living by convenience. And I learned many years ago that living by convenience, is not going to get me very far in life.
Now, let me bring this home to really you know, for a takeaway In this episode, because obviously, I'm using nouns and verbs and you get it and, you know, living by convenience is dangerous. As I said, the reason that is dangerous, is because it's a dead end. I mean, you could watch Netflix every day, because you don't want to do something else. And the reality is, where is that going to get you in life. Now I'm going to use my transformational coaching programs as an example here. Every time we offer a program, which we're going to be doing again in, in, in when September here coming up, I had to think there for a second my brains a little foggy, is we have something like I don't know 20, 30,000 people register because you're interested in finding out more about what I do and the content and how I can help them.At the end of the day, we might have anywhere Well, the last couple of years, you know, 700 or more register to 1000. Register for the Transformational Coaching Programs.
And they're at an investment price point where it's not cheap. But I pick that price point for a reason. Because it's enough of an investment to make people serious about the investment and to show up and do the work. And a lot of people because we have private groups where we build up to the program and make the offering a lot of people I mean, 10's of 1000's, want to take the coaching and the training, but the nail ultimately come up to Well, I can't afford it. And what they're not recognizing is they're living from circumstance. And they're living from convenience. And many years ago, a good friend of mine, she and I went to a Transformational Program. It was a weekend long back in, I think, 2013, I believe. And I knew the kind of money she made, and she didn't make a lot. And the program was 12,000 bucks for a couple of days. And I said, Molly, how did you you know, I'm glad you're here. How did you afford this? And she goes, Oh, I picked up a second job. I really wanted to be in this program. So I did what I had to do to make it happen. And that's the takeaway from this episode, is if you want something in life, many times, it's not right in front of you. People are not handing it to you on a silver platter. And the reality is that you've got to do what you have to do to make it happen. And here is literally where 90% of people quit.
They quit is that they make excuses. They won't do what they have to do to get the outcomes that they want. And I look at people who do great things in the world. And you look at athletes. Right now the Olympics is going on in Tokyo. I know some Olympic athletes, I've coached some Olympic athletes. And I remember one of my my friends one time, he was a four time qualifying Olympic athlete. And he was a diver. And the only person who is qualified as much as him is Greg Louganis. And we were talking one day, and I've told the story before. But the last time that he was diving for a medal was in Beijing. And he said, when we left DFW and we flew, you know, we flew it to Beijing, we lost a day in travel, and then a day traveling over the international dateline. And it goes my competition in China diving that didn't lose those days. They had those two days that I didn't have to train. And he goes, when I got to Beijing, I had to make up what I lost in those two days, to be the strongest competitor that I could be, you know, in competition. And he did win a medal.
But But the point is, is look at that determination is that people like Olympic, you know, Olympians, and people that are very successful in life meaning externally in the external world. Whether it be some kind of you know, something social or money or, or political or, or, you know, sports. People do what they have to do to make something happen. And that's not always convenient. As a matter of fact, it's never convenient, ever. But so many people. It's a simple, it's phrase, you've heard it before. So many people won't go the extra mile. And I'm telling you right now, if you want to avoid the danger of being stuck in the same place in life, because that's what convenience creates, if you want to, you know, avoid that. And it's dangerous. Why? Because nothing ever changes. Your health doesn't change. your finances don't change. I mean, heck, I mean, you know, I exercise until this week, every single day. Is it convenient? No, it's not. Do I enjoy it? Yeah. I always feel better because of the release of endorphins afterwards. But I'm telling you, there's some days I'm like, I don't want to do it right now. And I changed my self talk. And I'm observant of that. Because I know, if I keep my attention on that self talk, I'm going to talk myself out of working out. And that's not an option. It's not an option.
So maybe speaking of not an option, you want to see your life changed dramatically. Make it an option, not to work from convenience. Final story here. One of my friends today has a net worth of about $100 million. And he buys not single but multifamily properties. And I've told the story and I believe here on the podcast, but I'll tell him because it fits in nicely here is that many years ago, he lived in Boston. And there was some real estate training or seminars or something going on in New York City. And he worked construction, he we call him the son of a butcher, because he grew up in Brazil, the son of a butcher. So he grew up with the out of the money. And he was just really, really had the desire, he wanted to be a real estate investor. So at this time in his life, he worked in construction. So what he would do is he would catch a bus from Boston to New York City, and ride the bus for three hours. And then he would, you know, go with real estate seminar. And I think it would finish something like 11pm. And then he'd go back to I guess, Penn Station or wherever, and then travel back to Boston, and then back to his apartment. And he would, you know, he told me, he got home like 3:34 in the morning. And he woke up at 6am to go to work again.
Do you think it was convenient for him to do that? But no, he did it. Because he wanted the education. And it was in no way convenient for him to do that. But he did it. And now that's why he has a net worth of over $100 million. Because as long as I've known him, and it's been a good, I think 12 13 years now, here's a phrase that he lives by. I love the phrase, because I live by it. And the phrase is this, make it happen. Make it happen. So your takeaway is if you want something, then do whatever it takes to make it happen. And that is definitely not living by convenience. as well. We live a lot of people live in convenience, because of fear. And convenience is the smokescreen, meaning if I start a business on my you know, on my own, or I do XYZ or any you know, anything we could say, while it's you know, it's just that's not time, it's this and that. It's all excuses, all excuses.
Another friend of mine, he's a speaker. And I don't know he probably makes 20 30 million a year. And he's always said his his his his stick is his money making money. But he's always said you can do one of two things. You can make money or you can make excuses, but you can't make both. And when you make excuses. You're living by convenience, because you have the natural born ability to figure out anything. So get uncomfortable. Let life be inconvenient. And watch things start changing. Okay, that's it for today. And I'm out of energy. So I'm going to wrap this episode up and I'll catch you on another episode.
Okay, so before you actually hop over to another episode, I have something new for you guys. And I've been doing a lot of work for the past year and sell them in psychology. Of course. I've been doing it for a lot of years. But I've created something new for you guys. And it's a free audio experience. And what you want to do is go to jim fortin.com/solve yourproblems, which is one word jimfortin.com/solveyourproblems. And if you have any problems with money, or long term health, not just being sick like I am right now, but I mean health problems that are long term, or relationships, which research shows that 50% of people in the US get divorced, then go download, go download, you know this audio and listen to all of it. Because at first, you might be inclined to say, Nope, it doesn't pertain to me. And I've actually had many people say that, and when they've done what I've told them to do for 30 days, they're like, Oh, my God, I really did have some major, some majors issues in that area that I didn't even recognize. And when you solve those, when you when you, when you go through that through that audio, and listen and do what I tell you, you'll see things in yourself after, after doing it for a little while, you've never seen in yourself. And I tell you that because I've tested this audio, I had in my last group, I had, I don't know 70 100 people in it more than I don't know a lot. And I had them do what I share with you in that audio program. And I just said, Hey, guys do this for 30 days. And 30 days later I checked in and the bee gees to be fully transparent. I was shocked. I was shocked at the outcome and results of three simple words. So go to jimfortin.com/solveyourproblems, and give it a listen. Alrighty, I'll catch you on the next episode. Bye bye.
