The Jim Fortin Podcast
EPISODE 241: “Are You Excessively Spending Or Investing Your Life?”
October 26, 2022
When you think of spending and investing, what do you think of?
Most of us think of investing as a good and smart thing, and spending, especially excessively, as a bad thing. Right?
How about we put this into a new perspective?
How about your thoughts, thinking, and emotions? What if we put the old-fashioned “swear jar” on the counter, as a metaphor? With the “swear jar,” each time you said a bad word you have to put a dollar into it. And, of course, this means there is a cost to using bad words. Actually, there is a loss of that dollar from your pocket.
Now, what about your thoughts? What if all disempowering, fearful, and negative thoughts cost you? And, the reverse, all positive thoughts were an investment in a better quality of life?
What if every time you had a negative thought and got into fear you spent your life and when you were positive in your thinking you were investing in your life?
In this episode, I talk about a few strategies to interrupt your negative thoughts. These steps are:
1) Awareness
2) Conscious choice to move your attentionÂ
3) Where to move your attention and moving itÂ
4) Gratitude
5) And, Repetition
When you practice what you’re going to learn in this episode it can make a huge difference in your life.
Transformational Takeaway
You want to be investing more in your life than you are spending.

And we do not you know, invest and replenish very quickly we are in trouble. And this episode, I want to talk about spending and investing. But I want to talk about spending and investing. Not with money as you know it, but I want to talk about spending and investing with your emotions, which drive your life. Now this doesn't apply to everyone, but if you're like a lot of people and you look around in the world right now, most people are spending way too much. And they're finding themselves in places they do not want to be in life. Like all episodes, if you want tools and I'm going to give you some very specific tools in this episode. Because this podcast is a combination of Brain Science, Transformational Psychology, and Ancient Wisdom, all rolled into one to take your life to levels, you've never thought possible. If you're wanting a lot more in life, to feel better, to heal, to have peace of mind, to feel powerful and alive, and to bring more abundance and prosperity into your life and this podcast is for you. Because you're going to start learning how to master your mind and evolve your consciousness. And when you do that, anything you want, then becomes possible for you. I'm glad you're here.
When you think of spending and investing. What do you think of. Now, obviously most of us have not all of us think about money. You spend money and you invest money. And obviously we all know that if you keep spending, because many people will get into this, they've got really bad spending habits and they spend, and they spend, and they spend money. They do not have. And then very quickly they find themselves in trouble. So, we all understand that. And, you know, most of us think we believe that investing is a smart and great idea and spending excessively is a bad idea, right? Well, let's put that into perspective with your emotions.
How about your thoughts, you’re thinking and your emotions. You know, let's use a metaphor here. What if we put that old fashioned swear jar on the counter as a metaphor? Now most people know what a swear jar is. And basically, that's for people I'm laughing here that want to break the habit of using profanity. They have a jar on the counter. And every time they say a bad word, they have to put a dollar in the swear jar. And when you look at it, the person that's actually swearing and putting a dollar in the swear jar is actually giving something up. They're giving up money out of their pocket and putting it in the jar. Now, I never had one of those in my house because profanity, really wasn't used in any kind of excessive way in my house.
But as I understand when you have a swear jar, Then I think one thing that families do is they take the money, and they do something as a family project or buy something for a family or something like that. Anyway, you understand the point. Now, what about your thoughts? What if all of your disempowering, fearful in negative thoughts cost and a tangible way. What if you had to give up a dollar today? For each and every time that you got into fear, you got into negativity, or you got into some disempowering thought, and you had to put that dollar in a jar. How many dollars would you put in that jar by the end of the day?
And on the reverse of that, think about, for example, All of the positives, same metaphor. And of course, I don't have an example for you right now. I mean, how you would do the positive. Didn't think through that part of the podcast episode, but that's okay. You get the point. But how about positive investments? And laughing at myself, positive investments are basically when you're holding your attention and the right place, a positive investment is when you hold your attention in a place, a thought form. That supports you in creating the outcomes that you want in life. so, another metaphor here, let's look at it this way. Imagine your life for a moment I remember one time when I went to acupuncture. And Dr. Ni my acupuncturist. He was also my, uh, my Tai Chi master and Kung Fu master.
He said, hey, if acupuncture doesn't work for you. Then don't come after a couple of sessions and it worked for me very well, very well, but he's, I said, well, Dr. Ni, how come? What do you mean? And he goes, well, you know, your, your life is time. And if it's not working for you and you're still coming here, you're wasting your time. Therefore, you're wasting your life. So, the way that I look at it, when you're in your fear and your worries, you're wasting your time. You're wasting your energy. You're wasting your life. That is a bad investment. That's what I want to call spending. Spending excessively. When you spend excessively the word excessively is obviously the important word here. When you spend excessively, you know what happens?
And that's the same thing when you worry and worry and worry excessively. Have you ever really thought about how you are hurting your physiology, how you're hurting your body? And then what you're creating in consciousness. And I assure you, it's nothing positive. It's nothing that you want. You know, it's no secret that worry is a big cause of disease. We know that we scientifically know that, and worry comes from fear. So, what is the cost/spending of worry? I mean, this is a moot point in science and physiology. In this episode, I want to talk about a few simple strategies that you can use to interrupt your negative thoughts. You can use to actually refocus your attention and to move your attention so that you're now investing. You're actually, you know, you're investing your thoughts in positive outcomes and positive frequencies and vibrations.
Before I share the strategy with you. I call it a pattern interrupt. Before I share it with you. You know, you probably have heard the parable of the two wolves. It's a native American parable. This native American grandfather is talking to his grandson, at least in the way that I heard it. And he's telling his grandson about two wolves. And there's one Wolf. That's the bad Wolf. And there's a Wolf. That's the good Wolf and the bad Wolf gets into all these negativities and negative emotions and all these negative emotional states. And the good Wolf gets into the opposite, the positive vibrations and the love and the healing and everything else.
And the grandson says, well, which Wolf wins? And the grandfather pauses for a moment. And he said, the one that you feed. So, when it comes to feeding. And it comes to spending. When you're spending the metaphor, I'm using in this episode. You're feeding the bad Wolf. You're feeding what you do not want, and you're actually weakening yourself. What you want to do? Is the opposite. The metaphor that I'm using is investing. You want to invest in your evolution, your transformation, your growth, your health, your wellness, and your peace of mind. Before I keep on going. I know that I've not asked in a while, but if you're getting benefit from these episodes. And I would have to guess that you are because why else would you be here if you are please, I'm asking seriously, because a lot of people need this help in the world right now. Please share the podcast, share it on your Facebook, your LinkedIn, your Twitter, your tik tok, wherever people share. Please share the podcast so that you and I together can reach more people.
Okay. So, we're going to use your emotional state. That's where we're going to start, because that's going to be your barometer to understand where you are and whether you are spending or whether you are investing. I go back to a quote that I heard many years ago. It's been at least a decade. If not more than that, that I used to listen to Abraham Hicks. And Abraham once said that if you're feeling bad, you are miscreating. And the reason why is because if you're feeling bad, we create through our feelings. We go and go back and listen to episode number nine, about money and how people use a law of attraction and repel money. But we go from thinking to feeling. To frequency and the vibration. And when you're feeling bad about something. And you obviously know what causes you to feel bad. Fear. Worry. You know, a hating on yourself, judging yourself, looking at yourself in the mirror and beating yourself up, talking yourself down the inner critic.
When you're in these negative emotional loops mentally that's where your frequency and your vibration are, and your frequency and vibration are physics, and they are what create for you. So basically, that's why the world is our self-fulfilling prophecy. What you feel is what you create, what you feel is what you attract to yourself. So, think for a moment about feeling. If you've ever been there and it's been many years since I have been, but I've been there. Think about when you have spent way. And I mean way too much money and you have no idea how you're going to pay for it. I mean, think about that for a moment to think about how you feel about that. You know, again, it's a metaphor, but that's the one I want to use here because we all understand that. And that is spending. It's not investing.
But imagine again, you actually took that money that you blew in a bar one night and you blew several hundred dollars, or you bought things you couldn't afford, and you invested it then how would you feel? That's exactly what we're talking about with your emotions and we're talking about using your emotions in a very positive way. I want to give you a little leeway here and that, you know, the world has changed dramatically. Especially in the world of economics in the last four or five, six months. And many of us were not expecting that. Obviously, many of us had what I call the rug pulled out from underneath us. I understand that, but what I want to share with you is if you've had the rug pulled up from underneath you. And you're still living in that place now what's vital is that you move your frequency and vibration, and you do that by moving your thinking.
And in all fairness to you, I mean, I had the rug pulled up from underneath me. And I'm in the process right now, which is what inspired this episode. How do I need to shift? Where do I need to invest as opposed to spending with my emotions mentally? Now in fairness to me, honestly, I do not get into a ton of worry, like, oh my God, oh my God, what's going to happen in the world. Oh, no, this is, I don't get into any of that. And that's because they work from a place of basically, no matter what happens, I'm still going to be fine in life. And what I mean by, I have sat in this, that, you know, the podcast before our phrase that I live by. Is everything always has been, is now and will always be fine. I have the circumstances of my life changed a bit with the external world absolutely. But I know at a deep core level, at a soulful level. Everything is going to be fine.
And I also know that I've got to shift my frequency and vibration and people around me to create more of what I want and this current external world that we live in So again that's what inspired this episode for you So wherever you are right now, that's fine. That's where you are. But if you're there two and three and four months from now, it's because you are choosing to stay there. You were choosing to overspend, you were choosing to keep your frequency and vibration there, and you have to move your attention to create a lot higher frequency and vibration, which is actually investing in what you want not spending what you want.
So, a question right now for you be easy on yourself. No need to judge, no need to get in the fear about this. Where are you in life right now? Based upon, let's say for example, your finances. Wherever you are in the world right now. Is your external world and you have been complicit in creating that. And that applies to me as well. And I recognize that, and it applies to you. You've had some complicity there based upon where you've held your attention, which is created your frequency and vibration, which is created the outcomes that you have in your current life. So again, if you want more, we have to actually stop spending, start investing, move your attention, keep your attention somewhere else and recreate we're using your frequency and your vibration. If you're new to the podcast, again, go back to episode number nine, where I talk about frequency and vibration. And I explained more about it there. Plain and simple let's physics, how frequency and vibration create for us.
Before I give you the strategy and just a moment, you know, I want to go back to, I believe it was 2009 or 10, and we all know that the world came tumbling down financially around that time. And I used to coach heavily in the real estate industry. And I remember many agents saying I don't get it. I don't understand. I was doing so good last year. And this year I'm doing horrible. Oh my gosh. I feel bad. I feel bad. I feel horrible. And when these people are doing this, what they that they haven't recognized. When they were doing really well, they were writing the economic wave. And when the wave actually collapsed, they collapsed with the wave because that's still where their frequency and vibration was. You have to raise your frequency and vibration to raise your life.
And the smart agents back then. And I think something like 40% of the agents quit the industry. Why? Because they didn't change their frequency and vibration. The smart agents actually. They shifted very, very quickly. And that's what you have to do. Even if it doesn't pertain to your money, if it's your health, if it's your relationship, whatever it is in your life, if you're not getting what you want. You have to shift your frequency, which are your, excuse me, your vibration, which actually shifts your frequency. And you do that by the concept of starting to think along the lines. Am I spending here or am I investing here? And I'm going to walk you through a process in just a minute, five steps to very easily show you. And to help you recognize when you're spending. When actually you should be investing energetically.
So, this whole podcast is about living your life from the inside out. So, let's talk about that. And we live on the inside in our emotions. Our emotions are what create for us. Many people think it's our thinking, but thinking is fourth dimension emotions, are fifth dimension. We create through their frequency and vibration of, of emotions. And how you feel is what you electromagnetically vibrate and what you create. Now. I know someone listening and go, well, that's a bunch of crap, blah, blah, blah, new age. Mumbo-jumbo well, you right now, if you've listened for any amount of time. I know you've heard me say before that you are an electromagnetic bag of skin. That's why you have an EEG and an EKG. You are electromagnetics and being electromagnetic. You are subject to the properties and the laws of physics, plain and simple. You can argue till the cows come home. plain in simple.
So, there are five steps that I want to share with you right now. You may want to write these down if you're driving or something like that, or at the gym running or whatever, then do it a little later, come back and listen. But I want to go through five steps to shift your attention and to permanently move it to a new place. The five steps are this. I'm going to tell you what they are, that I'm going to come back and walk you through them. The first step is awareness. The second step is a conscious choice to move your attention. The third step is to recognize where your attention is. The fourth step is holding new attention with new focus. Holding it in gratitude and the final step is repetition. Now let me explain each of these steps to you. Okay. And then I'm going to walk you through a scenario. And then I strongly suggest I urge that you learn this little bitty five step process. And I can promise You practice I will promise you, it will make a difference in your life very quickly.
Okay. Step number one is awareness and people will say things well, how do I know what I'm spending? Well, it's simple. When you are feeling bad. You're in a negative emotional state when you're in a negative emotional state that right there is your cue. Okay. I'm in a bad place something needs to change. The example that I've used for many years inside my programs is, you know, when you walk inside, A dry cleaners. A lot of them have that little laser at the bottom of the door that, you know, the ding doing that tells somebody in the back that somebody walked in the front door. That laser is an alert. When you're feeling bad, that's your laser. That is your alert that you're spending way too much. Step number one is awareness. And you have awareness when you're feeling bad because you know, when you're feeling bad.
Step number two is actually a conscious choice to move your attention. Because see you're feeling bad. Because that's where your attention is. So, step number two is okay I'm feeling bad. I have to move my attention. What I want to point out also is you can also talk yourself through this, which we'll cover in just a moment. You can use your self-talk to walk you through this process when you need the process. And if you're like most of us, you're going to need this process and about an hour from now and I'm kidding. I don't know if it's an hour or two hours or three hours, but you're going to find some point in the next 24 If you're like most people, if you don't. You know, if this doesn't apply. That's great. That's awesome. But if you're like most people. You're going to need this somewhere in the next few hours. And you've probably been needing it for a while.
Okay. Step number one is awareness. Step number two is the conscious choice to move your attention. Now, step number three is moving your attention. But what is moving your attention and where do you move it? However, you feel is what you're thinking. That's where your attention is. And that moment you have to move your attention. But the question is where do you move your attention? Where you move your attention. Is to the opposite or to something. That's opposite or, you know, in some way, unlike feeling bad. Let me give you an example here of thought and feeling. Now we will have brain-based feelings that will pop up. I'm going to give you that. But for the most part, when you’re feeling a certain emotional way, it's because you're thinking something prior. You are thinking a happy thought you smile; you feel happy. You are thinking a sad thought. You feel bad and you're crying.
Notice the emotional state generally pertains to what you were thinking first. So back to what I'm talking about. If you're not feeling good, it's because your attention is in the wrong place. And if you're feeling bad, it's because your attention is on something generally fear and worry of some sort. So, if you want to actually move your attention. You have to move your thinking. So, the question would be to say, you know, to synopsize this part or summarize, sorry. Is if you're feeling bad, that's where your attention is. What thoughts can you choose to start thinking that would create a good feeling for you. It's as simple as that. That's what you want to do because see it's called dual task interference. What that means is your brain cannot hold two thoughts simultaneously. It can hold one after the other, but it cannot hold two simultaneously. So, if you're thinking positive things, you're automatically going to start feeling in a positive way and the reverse of negative. So, to move your attention, you have to move your thinking.
So, the question that I have for you is in all the ways that you're feeling negative, which creates a negative emotional state, which is spending a hallow a lot, metaphorically speaking. What are positive things that you can think now? Let me give you a little hint here. For me and for most of us, here's where I go to automatically. So, if I'm in a negative emotional state. Okay. And I immediately want to go to a positive emotional state. The way to do it is to go into gratitude because when you're truly and emotionally grateful for something. Number one, your vibration and frequency and number high. But with what I'm talking about here, the way you feel changes. I mean, seriously, think about that. When you're grateful for your health, your wellness, your car, your home, your relationship, your job, your money, whatever it is when you are grateful for that for the most part and it's almost ironclad. You can't feel bad about what you're grateful for and it's not even it's you can't even the way the brain works. I talked about dual task interference. You can't do it. So, what you want to do, if you want to move your attention. The easiest way to do it is okay. What's the reverse. So, there's negativity that I'm feeling that I'm thinking right now. Where can I go to gratitude? And what can I be grateful for? Hopefully that refutes the negative thoughts I was just having.
And that's simply the way out. So, we go from basically a negative emotional state and overspending to a positive emotional state. I do want to point out you have that power, but you know, what is simple as this is right now, when you're listening to this. Most people don't get it. Okay so what's obvious right here is and honestly, it took me a lot of years to learn this really it did. It took me a lot of years because I spent my twenties at a big part of them. And even in the, my early thirties being in so much fear and worry, never recognizing that I had the power to actually move my attention. And when I moved my attention, I would feel better. I never fully realized that I am emotionally where my attention is, which is where my thinking is. And if I want to feel better then I need to think better. And I think based upon where I choose to hold my attention, same thing applies to you. Now, let me tell you what's going to happen to a lot of you. And I know that.
You know, people have said, Jim, how come you speak in such generalities why? The principle, 80/ 20. I've done this for a lot of years, and I've watched, I don't know how many hundreds of thousands of people, millions of not millions. I've watched the patterns and people. I know what's going to happen because I've seen it for decades being in this field. And what happens is the many people. As they move their attention. And they feel good for just a bit. And then what happens like a rubber band, boom. It snaps right back and they're back in the role place again. Well, here is your task. Move your attention again, and it may pop back again, and it probably will or could move your attention again and it could pop back again. Move your attention again. Now what will happen as you move your attention; you will start retraining your brain. That you know what, every time your brain takes you back to the old way. You move it and the brain will, parts of the brain will eventually learn. What's the point of going back to the old way? Speaking metaphorically here.
What's the point of going back to the old way. When, when I get back to the old way, he goes back to the new way and feeling good. So, I'm going to stop making him feel the old way again. That's basically kind of what's going on in your brain. Doesn't matter. What's going on. I'm just telling you this works. So, you can use yourself, talk to walk yourself through it. Here are the five steps of self-talk. Number one. Is whatever you want to say. But recognize have the awareness of the emotional state crap. I don't feel good I feel bad. I'm scared right now. I'm angry right now. I'm uncertain right now. And just notice the emotional state associated that step number one. Step number two, talk to yourself. Okay. I don't like how I feel. I have to move my attention. Seriously. It can be as simple as that. Step number three. I move my attention to blank. And now blank is the opposite of the feeling bad. And the easiest place as I had mentioned is gratitude.
So, let's say for example, that you're feeling bad about not having a ton of money right now. Or you're feeling bad physically. What you do is you move your gratitude to how you do, and when you do feel good or you move your gratitude to, you know what? I've got a roof over my head. I've got a car; some people ride the bus. Some people have no roof over their head. Move your attention to gratitude and keep your attention there. Step number one is acknowledgement. Crap. I feel bad. Step number two is self-talk. I moved my attention. Step number three, I moved my attention to blank. Step number four, if you want to add in here is I am grateful for blank, meaning whatever it is, you moved your attention to. Now here's a key. Feel it. Do not just say it, feel, it, feel the gratitude. And then obviously step number five is repetition, and that you may have to do this over and over and over again. And basically, what you're doing is you are retraining. Or you’re actually training and reconditioning Brain.
Name of the game. Practice. Practice makes mastery or creates mastery. And when I say practice, I'm going to tell you what I see invariably in my programs. Hey, you know, Jim, I did what you told me, and it didn't work well. Okay. I will ask how much you do it. Well, I did it for one day. No, it doesn't work that way. You might have to do this for a month. I mean, if you're seriously entrenched in negativity or fear and worry. It could take a month before you start getting relief. You must retrain your brain. And the way you train your brain, which is the way we learn everything is through repetition. You learn the alphabet through repetition. You learn to write cursive. If you know, hell, I'm guessing in the millennials learn that in school. We learned it in school in my age category, we learned through repetition. You tie your shoes to repetition. You learn to play sports through repetition. You learn. I mean, I used to learn my multiple multiplication tables through repetition. That is the way the brain learns. So, the way that you're showing up now in negativity and spending way too much and not investing energetically and emotionally is because you've learned repetition for many years of your life to overspend overspend overspend and negativity.
You have to retrain the brain. That's not going to happen overnight, but yet again, when you practice this every single day and keep in front of you, you might even want to take these five little steps that I gave you. And actually, just write them on the three by five card. Boom. Put it in your pocket. Put it as a screensaver on your phone. The number one thing is, I'm going to tell you what else is going to happen. Number one, number one thing is keeping it in front of you, but what's going to happen is if you do not keep this in front of you, the number one thing that's going to happen here to keep you from keeping it in front of you is guess what? You're going to forget. Why we live in a world of attention deficit, and you know what your attention will be somewhere else. And to manage is you forgotten about this two week from now, you're going to be like, oh yeah, Jim told me about that, but I forgot. So, write this down, put it in your pocket and your purse on your bathroom mirror somewhere. Keeping in front of you and practice. Practice practice. When you do that, you will start noticing changes. So, your transformational takeaway is if you want a better life. Then you want to be investing more in your life than you're spending. So, you think again about your emotions. How are you investing your emotions. Okay, that wraps up this episode. Thanks for listening. And I'll catch you over on another episode. Bye-bye.
